OUR LEGACY
This is the story of how a dusty old town on the Grand Trunk Road became the heart of rug‑making in India.
1920
Founding
Shortly after WWI, three British gentlemen - F.H. Oakley, F.H. Bowden and J.A.L Taylor gathered the finest local craftsmen under the banner of Obeetee (O-B-T).
1956
Special Visitors
With its reputation for quality craftsmanship, Obeetee welcomed elite guests to tour the facilities, including Queen Elizabeth II, India Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and India Former President Ramaswamy Venkataraman.
1969
Woolmark Licensee
Obeetee becomes the world's first licensee of 'Woolmark' for hand-knotted rugs.
1984
Water Treatment and Conservation Technology
Obeetee creates the industry's first ever water effluent treatment plant. Decades later, it would unveil proprietary technology that reduces water usage for washing a carpet by 90%.
1989
Project Mala
Obeetee donates school facilities and begins long-term partnership with Project Mala, a specialty school program for children.
1999
Multi-Effect Dyeing
Obeetee introduces multi-effect dyeing to the carpet industry, a process that adds color to wool fibers and yarns.
2004
Social Accountability International
Obeetee becomes the first rug company in the handmade industry to secure the prestigious SA 8000 Standard.
2007
Carbon Footprint Reduction
Obeetee generates steam from rice husks to generate power at a reduce rate.
2015
Women Weavers Training Program
The Women Weavers program is launched, a training program to instruct women in the art of rug weaving, to reshape the concept of the traditional female role in rural India and create a viable, long-term employment opportunity.
